I can confirm that Wawa was a name that struck the hearts of hitchhikers in the 1970s. You prayed your ride would go through it because there were so many stories of people stuck for days and even weeks in Wawa -- and one (probably apocryphal) story of a guy who never got out (he finally walked into town, where he met a girl, got a job, bought a house etc.)

What a kicker! Our Routhier community centre in Ottawa was converted to a COVID quarantine/recovery centre for street people during the pandemic. It's getting back to routine programming now.
Weww glad you made it! What I remember seeing often about Wawa goes back to the early 70s when hitchhiking was still very popular. Wawa was THE place you did not want to be stuck with your thumb out. Apparently you could spend days waiting for a ride.
